Hi Everyone! If you follow us on instagram you will have seen all the baby chicken spam over the last two weeks. I can’t believe they’re almost two weeks old! We are the proud parents of 6 beautiful chicks: Waffles, Beeps, Tiger Lily, Buttermilk, Chipmunk and Pigwidgeon.

Waffles, above, is the most affectionate. He’s yellow with “toasted waffle” head and will lay moss colored eggs.
Buttermilk, bottom left is another moss egger, the two chipmunk lookalikes will lay brown speckled eggs and the other two will lay blue eggs.

We have no idea how many are hens and how many are roosters and won’t really know until week 10–14 but really hope we can keep them all. They sure start to feel like family!

VINEYARD:

Land clearing started about a month ago and is still going, hopefully no more than another week. We’re so close! We are clearing 6 more acres in order to plant an additional 2.5 acres of vines next year. You really want airflow and sunlight from all directions so when you’re clearing in the middle of a forest, ideally you have a generous buffer of cleared space between vines and trees. In this case we cleared a wide strip from the top of our ridgeline all the way to the bottom valley so the vines wouldn’t be boxed in by trees for maximum “wind drainage”.

We’ve scheduled our lime (40 tons) and phosphorous delivery for Monday, weather permitting, and we just bought a proper plow to get those worked in about 16 inches into the ground with our tractor. Below some progress pics of the land clearing. Of course they’re leaving the portion of land with the best views uncleared till last, so more to come!

Who knows which grapes we’re planting in the Spring?

Multiple choice:

A). Cab Sauv, Cab Franc, Grüner Veltliner, Chambourcin, Sangiovese

B). Cab Sauv, Cab Franc, Chardonnay

C). Cab Sauv, Cab Franc, Chambourcin, Pinot Noir
